"Surface Design encompasses the coloring, patterning, and structuring of fiber and fabric. This involves creative exploration of processes such as dying, painting, printing, stitching, embellishing, quilting, weaving, knitting, felting, and papermaking." Surface Design Association

Mission Statement

The Utah Surface Design Group (USDG) was established in the early 1990's when a small group of fiber enthusiasts, textile artists, and teachers came together to share their passion for surface design. It has always been the group's mission to provide a supportive, creative, community where the exchange of ideas and information is paramount.

Now with over 40 members, the USDG conducts bi-monthly meetings and demonstrations by local artists and business owners. To encourage creative exploration and growth, the group also hosts an annual workshop taught by nationally-known artists and leaders in the Surface Design field. Anyone with an interest in surface design is welcome to attend meetings and join the group.

To promote members work and to educate and engage the Utah community-at-large the USDG curates a biennial surface design exhibit. In May of last year they joined with Clay Arts Utah to present, Ancient Arts: Clay and Fiber 2009, at the Patrick Moore Gallery in Salt Lake City. Additionally, the Covey Arts Center in Provo, UT hosted a USDG group show in September, 2009. Photos from both of these exhibits can be seen on the Exhibits page.
